The solar cross is common on petroglyphs from the Bronze Age. The sun was likened to a wheel drawn across the firmament. It is also believed that the cross symbolizes the four cardinal points, or the four seasons. The sun was important to the Vikings as it gave life to the seeds and was used in the navigation of the ships.
