The raven was seen as Odin's messenger by the Vikings. Hugin (thought) and Munin (memory) fly every morning over Asgard and Midgard to return in the evening and tell about everything they have seen and heard. The raven has also been considered a soul carrier and whoever found a black feather knew that the soul of a deceased relative or friend was present to offer help.
