Not in the least contemporary with the Vikings, who certainly didn't sit and tinker with horns on their helmets during dark winter evenings. It is a myth created by some Wagner story in the 1870s and thus does not mean that the Vikings ran around and were barred on the battlefield.

He is the trolls' greatest enemy, and during the hunt he was pulled by the goats Tanngrisner and Tanngnojst in their chariot across the firmament. The sound evoked the thunder and the lightning created by the flash as he threw his hammer Mjölner at the troll.
