In the Huld manuscript, which is an Icelandic collection of wands of wizards, the original of Vegvisir is square. What shape surrounds Vegvisir really doesn't matter, round, with or without a band of runes or square. As the symbol itself has not changed, it does not affect the magic in Vegvisir either.
