The raven was seen as Odin's messenger by the Vikings. Hugin (thought) and Munin (memory) fly out over Asgard and Midgard every morning, returning in the evening to tell of all they have seen and heard.
The raven has also been considered a soul carrier and whoever found a black feather knew that the soul of a deceased relative or friend was present to offer help.
Aegishjalmur, or "helm of reverence," is an Icelandic galdrast staff built on the runes Algiz, Mannaz, and Eihwaz and is a Viking Age emblem of protection. The symbol was drawn between the eyebrows of warriors to aid them in battle and strike fear into their opponents.
Ægishjálmur is also called the Helmet of Fear. Helmet of Ægir which means fear/terror.
