An 'Irminsul' ("great pillar" in Old Saxon) was a sacred, pillar-like object that played an important role in the pagan beliefs of the Saxon people during the Viking Age.
Irminsul was built of wood and sometimes stone and represented the world tree Yggdrasil.
Sacred trees and groves were widely revered in Germanic and Nordic culture. In the oldest chronicle describing an Irminsul, it is referred to as a tree trunk erected in the open.
